Motorcycle Rental License Requirements

We take a valid driver’s license from your home country stating that you’re allowed to ride a motorcycle equivalent to the motorcycle you are renting. Please note that the state laws of which you are renting your vehicle from are the laws which are applicable for your rental.

Picking up from locations in the United States

Licenses issued from the United States

  • Two-wheel vehicles: Motorcycles
    • All 50 states require some sort of motorcycle endorsement on your driver’s license which is equivalent to the motorcycle you are renting.

  • Three-wheel: Trikes
    • Slingshot Rentals
      • Depending on your state issued license requirements, a motorcycle endorsement may not be required*. Below is a list of states that do not require a motorcycle endorsement to drive the Slingshot. Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Colorado, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington. For these states, a vehicle license is sufficient to drive the Slingshot.

        International customers – please follow the laws from which your license originates from regarding three-wheel endorsement.

    • Can-Am Spyder Rentals
      • Depending on your state issued license requirements, a 3-wheel motorcycle license may be required to drive the Can-Am Spyder*. The states of California, Nevada, and South Carolina do not require a 3-wheel motorcycle license and a vehicle license is sufficient to rent the Can-Am Spyder.   • Some International EAGLERIDER rental locations may require an International Driver’s License to rent from individual international locations.

Here are some examples of alternative licenses that we accept

Licenses issued from the European Union (Germany, Italy, France, United Kingdom, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden)

  • A1/A2 – Will allow you to rent scooters.
  • A – Will allow you to rent motorcycles or scooters.
  • B1 – Will allow you to rent three-wheeled vehicles.

Licenses issued from Canada

  • Class 6 designation – For all provinces except for Ontario
    • Ontario
      • Class M (includes M1 and M2): for full-speed motorcycles.
      • Class M with condition L (includes M1 and M2-L): for mopeds and motorized scooters (also called “limited-speed” motorcycles).
      • Class M with condition M (includes M1 and M2-M): for three-wheeled motorcycles.

Licenses issued from Australia

  • R-Date – Will allow you to ride scooters.
  • R – Will allow you to ride motorcycles or scooters.

Licenses issued from Brazil

  • Category A - designation on your driver’s license to ride any motorcycle or scooters.

International Driver’s Permits (not required for EAGLERIDER)

  • Although not required, it is recommended for all visitors with a license in a foreign language to obtain an IDP.
  • So long as your license is understandable, we will accept it.

Requirements for Renting a Motorcycle at International Locations

Please note that pickup locations in specific countries may have varying criteria for renting a motorcycle. The information provided below offers essential details on the criteria and regulations relevant to motorcycle rentals abroad. From age restrictions to licensing prerequisites, adhering to these requirements ensures a smooth rental process and promotes a safe and compliant riding experience during your international travels.

Australia Locations

  • You must be at least 25 years old.
  • You must have a valid motorcycle class driver's license.
    • If your license is not in English, you will need an International License or a certified translation.
  • You must have 2 years of riding experience.
  • You must have a major credit card.

Austria Locations

  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • You must have a valid motorcycle class driver’s license and international driver’s license with a class A motorcycle endorsement.
  • You must have a major credit card.

Brazil Locations

  • You must be at least 26 years old.
  • You must have a valid motorcycle class driver's license.
  • You must have a major credit card.
  • You must have skills in riding large motorcycles.

Costa Rica Locations

  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • You must have a valid motorcycle license from your country of origin.
  • A security deposit of $800 USD will be put on hold on any credit/debit card.

France Locations

  • You must be at least 25 years old.
  • You must have held an A license for at least 3 years (except for BMW 750 GS, DucatiScrambler 800, and Yamaha MT-07; for these models, you must be over 20 years old and possess an A2 license).
  • You must have a major credit card.

Germany Locations

  • For Munich
    • You must be at least 18 years old.
    • You must have a valid motorcycle license.
    • You must provide an ID card or passport with a current registration address.
    • A major credit card is required
  • For Frankfurt
    • You must be at least 21 years old.
    • Your right to drive a motorcycle must not be restricted (no restrictions).
    • An English or German driver's license is accepted; an international driver'slicense is required if not available.
    • A major credit card is required.

Greece Locations

  • For Athens Greece
    • You must be at least 21 years old.
    • You must have held a valid A1 motorcycle endorsement for at least 1 year.
      • An A2 motorcycle endorsement for at least 1 year is required if renting motorcycles with horsepower up to 47 HP.
    • A major credit card is required.
  • For Athens City Center
    • You must be at least 25 years old.
    • You must have a valid motorcycle license with category A and 2 years of riding experience.
    • International Driver’s Permit, Class A, is required for non-European license holders (Note: USA license holders do not require an international permit in Greece).
    • Rentals are limited to motorcycles up to 500cc and 47 hp if you have a valid A2 motorcycle license.

Japan Locations

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You must have a valid motorcycle license.
  • You must have a major credit card. The same limitations about engine displacement, transmission, etc. that apply to you in your home country, also apply in Japan.
  • Depending on the country of issuance of your driving license, you will need either an International Driving Permit based on the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, stamped with category A for motorcycles, or an official Japanese translation provided by the Japan Automobile Federation. For further details, please refer to this LINK.
  • International Driving Permits based on the 1968 Vienna convention on Road Traffic or those issued by the International Drivers Association are not in Japan.

Mexico Locations

  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • You must have a valid motorcycle license.
  • You must have a major credit card.

Morocco Locations

  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • You must have a valid motorcycle license.
  • You must have a major credit card.

Namibia Locations

  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • You must have a valid code A or M motorcycle license (for the BMW G310 GS, you must possess an A2 motorcycle license).
  • You must have a major credit card.

New Zealand Locations

  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • You must have a valid motorcycle class driver's license
  • You must have a major credit card.
  • You must wear a helmet at all times when riding.
  • Your driver’s license must be in English – If it is in another language, you will also need to obtain an International Driving Permit or an approved translation of your license (we can assist with this if needed).

South Africa Locations

  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • You must have a valid code A or M motorcycle license (for the BMW G310 GS, you must possess an A2 motorcycle license).
  • You must have a major credit card.

Spain Locations

  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • You must have a valid Class A motorcycle license with a minimum of 2 years riding experience.
    • Rentals are limited to motorcycles with horsepower up to 46 HP if you possess a valid Class A2 motorcycle license.
  • You must have a major credit card.

Switzerland Locations

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You must have a valid motorcycle class driver’s license with category A.
  • You must have a major credit card with a credit limit greater than CHF 3,000 (for excess insurance).

United Kingdom Locations

  • You must hold a full valid Class A motorcycle license.
  • Riders must be between 25 and 79 years of age and have held full motorcycle entitlement for a minimum of two years.
  • To ride with a pillion, riders must be between 35 and 70 years of age and have held full motorcycle entitlement for a minimum of three years.
  • Riders must not be engaged in professional sports, racing, gambling, modelling or entertainment (except as a classical musician), hawking or general dealing, street or market trading, studying full-time, serving in the United Kingdom armed forces under the age of 25, or serving in the armed forces of any other country.
  • Riders must not have:
    • Had more than one fault or partial fault accident in the last 3 years.
    • Been disqualified from driving, including Totting Up (TT99) convictions, in the last 3 years.
    • More than 8 unexpired points on their driving license.
    • Been convicted in the last 3 years of offenses for Reckless/Dangerous (All DD), Drink/Drugs (all DR / All DG), Taking/Stealing (All UT), Failing to Stop/Report (All AC), Motor Racing (MS50), Careless Driving (All CD), Mutual Recognition (All MR), or No Insurance (All IN).
    • Had a motor insurance proposal declined, a policy canceled, renewal refused, or special terms, conditions, exclusions, or increased premiums imposed.
